NEED HELP?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you choose the recipients of the food hampers?

Recipients of the food hampers are nominated by our charity partners and organisations. We work with over 40 different organisations across the UK including food banks, housing associations, registered charities, refuges and schools who nominate families living in food poverty irrespective of faith or background. To date, the charity has provided almost 15,000 food hampers to families in need across London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leicester.

What makes us unique?

Donors can follow their donation from start to end as they pack food hampers themselves at the event, and then personally hand deliver them to the nominated recipients. The experience of personally packing and delivering hampers, creates a better understanding of where each pound of donation goes and helps raise awareness of food poverty in their own local community. The sense of ownership instilled in volunteers fosters a sustainable model of giving, where the community becomes an active participant in its own upliftment.

How can I get involved?

You can volunteer to help at one of our events and/or donate to fund the cost of the hampers. The Diwali Basket Brigade event is held simultaneously across venues in Birmingham, London, Leicester and Manchester on the weekend before Diwali every year.  We also organise a food pallet drop during May of each year. Please also follow us on our social media pages to ensure you are kept up to date with the latest news.

What are the running costs of the charity?

We are proud to be 100% volunteer led and almost 100% free of administrative costs, ensuring every penny of donations raised goes directly to those in need. With over 600+ volunteers helping since its inception, Diwali Basket Brigade has empowered communities to come together to create positive change.

What is the cost of a hamper?

Hampers cost approximately £10 and contain essential non-perishable food items and toiletries such as pasta, soup, bread, rice, tinned vegetables and fruit. All products are purchased at ‘cost price’ from a well-established national wholesaler.

Is there any age restriction for volunteers?

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and ages. In fact that is one the most unique things about the charity event – everyone is welcome no matter what age, religion or background.  On the day of packing, there are tasks that are suitable for children as young as 2 and for the elderly. We do kindly request all under 18’s are supervised by an appropriate adult at our events.
